As with all our SETPD courses, this is an “Introduction to” course. A chance to explore catering as a career pathway whilst working on the Skills for Employment, Training and Personal Development qualification.
This course is designed to give you a practical introduction to working in a kitchen environment, helping you build both the skills and confidence needed to take your next steps.
You don’t need to have done anything like this before.
You just need to be willing to give it a go.
Through hands-on learning, you’ll develop your understanding of food preparation, kitchen routines, and how a working kitchen operates day to day. Functional Skills and employability are built into the course, supporting you to progress into further education, training, or work.
Our aim is to help bridge the gap to Level 1 opportunities, giving you the experience, confidence, and skills to move forward.
What you’ll do
This is an introduction to Catering, so you’ll learn by doing things properly, not just talking about them.
That includes:
-
Preparing simple dishes
-
Learning food preparation techniques
-
Understanding kitchen safety and hygiene
-
Following workplace routines in a kitchen
-
Learning about food and nutrition
-
Working as part of a team
You’ll also build communication skills, confidence, and get used to being part of a working environment.
Some days will feel easier than others. That’s normal.
We take the time to practise, repeat skills, and build things up step by step.
Alongside this, you’ll work towards Maths and English (Functional Skills) and take part in sessions that support confidence, organisation, and next steps.
Where this can lead
This course is about helping you take your next step.
For some learners, that might be:
-
Moving on to another course
-
Progressing to Level 1 study
-
Accessing work experience
-
Getting a job in a kitchen or catering environment
-
Building confidence to try something new
You don’t need to have it all figured out. We’ll help you work it out along the way.
