What happens if a 17 year old has no GCSEs?

Not having GCSEs at 17 is more common than people realise, and it is not a permanent barrier. Many alternative and vocational pathways do not require GCSEs as an entry requirement.

Functional Skills qualifications in English and Maths are widely accepted as equivalent to GCSEs and can be taken at any age in a flexible, low-pressure way. Many training providers and further education colleges offer these alongside vocational programmes.

The most important thing at 17 is finding a route that builds confidence and skills – qualifications can follow once a young person is re-engaged and motivated.
