Trauma-informed education is an approach that recognises how adverse experiences – abuse, neglect, bereavement, family breakdown, and others – affect a young person’s capacity to learn, regulate their emotions, and form trusting relationships.
In practice it means: staff who understand that difficult behaviour is usually communication; environments designed to feel safe and predictable; an emphasis on relationship before curriculum; and a whole-setting culture of empathy rather than judgment.
It does not mean ignoring expectations or avoiding challenge – it means building the foundations of safety and trust from which young people can genuinely grow.
