Support ranges from school-based pastoral care to specialist external provision, depending on how complex the situation is.
Within school: ask about reduced timetables, a named key adult, or a referral to the school counsellor or SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator).
Outside school: your GP can refer to CAMHS for mental health support. Your local authority may have an alternative provision team. A formal EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan) assessment may be appropriate if needs are significant.
Community and voluntary organisations also offer supported learning environments for young people who cannot manage mainstream – smaller, calmer, more flexible settings where young people can rebuild their confidence at their own pace.
