Do you have hands-on experience with cars — whether through work, hobby, or mentoring — and a natural ability to connect with young people?

New Meaning Training (NMT) is looking for a Mechanics Tutor to lead practical, engaging sessions in basic motor vehicle maintenance. You don’t need to be a qualified mechanic or teacher — just someone who’s confident in a workshop, patient with people, and passionate about helping young learners build skills for life and work.

Our learners are aged 16–25, many with EHCPs or additional needs such as autism, ADHD, and anxiety. Some have had disrupted education and may lack confidence, but they thrive in supportive, practical learning environments where they can build skills for life and employment.

This is more than a teaching role — it’s a chance to make a real difference. You’ll work with small groups in a relaxed, non-traditional classroom, using tools, tasks and teamwork to help learners gain qualifications, independence, and a sense of pride in what they can do.

Whether you’re early in your career or semi-retired and looking for a meaningful new chapter, we’d love to hear from you. Salary is negotiable based on experience. Training and support provided.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver practical, kinaesthetic sessions focused on Motor Vehicle Maintenance (e.g., basic servicing, diagnostics, workshop safety)
  • Support learners in gaining functional skills and AIM qualifications at Entry Level and Level 1
  • Build strong, positive relationships with young people, adapting your approach to meet a wide range of needs
  • Use trauma-informed, relational strategies to manage behaviour supportively
  • Maintain accurate records of learner progress, attendance, and EHCP outcomes
  • Collaborate with LSAs and other tutors to share ideas and maintain a consistent, engaging programme
  • Create a safe, welcoming environment where learners feel respected, challenged, and motivated
  • Work with external agencies, parents/carers, and internal support services where appropriate

About Us

New Meaning Training (NMT) offers education with a difference. We are an alternative education provider dedicated to helping young people aged 15-25 discover their strengths and develop the confidence and skills to earn their own living.

For the 2025-2026 academic year, around 300 young people from Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Warwickshire, West Midlands, and Berkshire will join one of our programmes. Many of these students are referred by secondary schools, pupil referral units, and Special Education Needs settings.

Our journey began in 2015 with the opening of our first centre in High Wycombe, originally known as “Toolshed.” Ten years on, NMT continues to grow, with two new centres for 2025-2026.

In Warwickshire New Meaning Training has two centres. A new one in the north of the county in Nuneaton, and a well-established and newly refurbished centre in the south in Stratford-upon-Avon. Both Warwickshire centres offer five learning programmes: Construction Multiskills, Motor Mechanics, Creative Art & Design, Sports and Computing. They incorporate functional skills qualifications in Maths and English, along with tutorials to support our well-rounded approach. We also provide a ‘Transition Support’ programme for young people with EHCPs who are not yet ready for a learning setting.

NMT tailors its programmes to meet the needs of its learners, considering Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. We comprehensively apply the principles of a Loving Care Approach (Trauma Informed Practice) to ensure all young people receive the support they need to thrive.

You will have:

  • Familiarity with motor vehicle mechanics and ideally workshop environments (formal qualifications not essential but advantageous)
  • Ideally, a Level 3 Award in Education & Training (or willingness to work towards it)
  • IOSH Working Safely certification (or willingness to obtain it)
  • Experience working with young people or in a training/mentoring capacity
  • Strong communication skills and a calm, confident manner
  • Patience, empathy, and an adaptable mindset
  • Confidence with planning and record keeping (training provided)
  • Understanding of, or willingness to learn about, SEND, trauma-informed practice, and youth safeguarding
